[Press Release] Malaysian Intellectual Property Firm Expands Operation into Singapore

KUALA LUMPUR – An established Intellectual Property (IP) firm based in Malaysia – KASS International Sdn Bhd – has announced a strategic expansion into the regional market with the opening of its new office in Singapore.

The Singapore office will act as a regional hub to oversee and co-ordinate operations in the South East Asian region, supporting KASS International’s existing offices in Kuala Lumpur and Penang. The office will reduce time and costs for handling of IP-related issues, as there will be a single agent handling all cases instead of multiple agents across different geographies.

Mr. P. Kandiah, Managing Director of KASS International, said that the Singapore office forms an important part of KASS International’s South East Asia regional growth strategy. “We believe we have properly timed our entry onto the regional stage. Demand for IP services is on the rise, as evidenced by the increase in number of intellectual property applications filed.”

“Appreciation for IP and the need for IP services have grown tremendously over the last few years, both within the South East Asian countries and by foreign applicants coming to this region. In Singapore alone, registered patents have risen 22% from 7,908 in 2003 to 9,692 in 2008. Trademark applications have remained consistent at an encouraging average of 24,000 new applications every year, while industrial design applications have jumped a significant 62% from 1,305 filed in 2003 to 2,120 in 2008.

While the company has established itself as one of the leading IP firms in Malaysia, stepping foot into Singapore is its first effort towards branching out to the entire South East Asian region.

“Singapore provides a unique opportunity to any company wanting to establish itself in this increasingly competitive and dynamic region”, Kandiah added.

“The opening of the Singapore office is a significant move for KASS. Already, a majority of companies looking to set up or expand their operations in the ASEAN region have headquarters in Singapore. Having our own office here will only allow us to better service their needs.”
