Position Overview:

Are you a seasoned local IP professional with 3 to 5 years of experience in trademarks, copyrights, industrial design rights, and trade secrets? Do you thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment where your expertise makes a real impact? If so, we want YOU to be part of our team!

 

Key Responsibilities

Client Consultancy:

Provide consultancy services to clients on IP rights, specifically focusing on trademarks, trade secrets, copyright, and industrial design rights. Ensure clients are guided through all aspects of their IP matters.

Trademark & Design Prosecution:

Prepare and manage all documentation for client trademark and design registrations, ensuring efficient prosecution of applications. Draft submissions and arguments in response to office actions and manage oppositions.

Contentious Matters & Dispute Resolution:

Handle complex and contentious IP matters, including disputes, investigations, negotiations, and oppositions. Draft and review agreements and submissions for hearings and contentious cases.

Client Communication & Project Management:

Act as the point of contact for large-scale and special clients, managing their specific IP needs. Lead and manage projects within the department, ensuring all objectives are met and maintaining high-quality standards.

Training & Supervision:

Train and supervise junior executives and paralegals, ensuring they carry out their tasks efficiently. Review drafts prepared by junior staff and assist in creating systems and templates to increase productivity.

Thought Leadership & Knowledge Sharing:

Present seminars, deliver talks, webinars, and write articles on IP-related topics. Keep updated on trends, developments, and legislative rulings impacting IP administration. Research procedural changes and serve as a subject matter expert.

Quality Control & Deadline Management:

Ensure timely responses to office actions and client inquiries, adhering to strict deadlines. Review and maintain the quality of work in line with the firm’s standards.

Departmental Improvement & Innovation:

Propose solutions to departmental challenges, identify areas for improvement, and contribute to strategic initiatives to enhance the department’s performance and workflow.

 

Qualifications:

  • Local Candidates (Malaysians) Encouraged to Apply
  • Education: Degree in Law, History, English Literature, or Psychology, with above-average academic results from reputable universities.
  • Experience: Minimum of 3 years of experience in the Intellectual Property field, with experience in conducting trademark searches and advising on trademark, design, and copyright law. Experience in filing trademark, design, and copyright applications is required.
  • Skills & Competencies:

1) Excellent command of English with strong writing and verbal communication skills.

2) Strong conceptual, analytical, and reasoning abilities.

3) Detail-oriented with excellent time management and organizational skills.

4) Ability to work independently and handle pressure in a deadline-driven environment.

5) Strong interpersonal skills and a collaborative team player.

6) Demonstrates integrity, ethical work practices, and a commitment to continuous learning.

 

Preferred Attributes:

  • Experience in managing contentious IP cases and advising clients on opposition and dispute resolution matters.
  • A proactive approach to problem-solving and innovation within the department.

Role Purpose:
  • Provide support and basic consultancy services on patent-related matters.
  • Assist in preparing patent specifications, reports, and other related documentation.
  • Help manage the prosecution of patent applications, ensuring timely responses to office actions.
  • Communicate with clients, associates, and IP offices on procedural matters.
  • Contribute to the firm’s thought leadership by writing articles and attending events.

  1. Patent Searches & Analyses:
  2. Assist in conducting patent searches for novelty, freedom-to-operate, and infringement analyses. Work with senior team members to interpret and analyze search results to provide basic recommendations to clients.
  3. Patent Specification Drafting:
  4. Assist in drafting and preparing patent specifications for filing. Ensure all relevant forms and documentation are accurately prepared and submitted within deadlines.
  5. Patent Prosecution Support:
  6. Support the management of patent applications by preparing responses to office actions and substantive examination reports. Assist in handling amendments to applications as directed by senior team members.
  7. Client Communication:
  8. Communicate with clients on basic procedural aspects, such as necessary documentation, fees, and timelines. Assist in maintaining clear and timely communication regarding the status of applications.
  9. Docketing & Deadline Management:
  10. Help maintain client records and docketing systems, ensuring all correspondence, documents, and reminders are tracked and managed ahead of deadlines. Ensure that filing is done accurately and in a timely manner.
  11. Invoicing & Filing Management:
  12. Assist in issuing invoices within specified timelines and ensure that all necessary fees are prepared for filings. Support follow-up processes to ensure payments and filings are completed.
  13. Knowledge Development & Writing:
  14. Write basic articles on patent-related topics and support the firm’s knowledge-sharing initiatives. Assist in the preparation of presentations or talks under the guidance of senior executives.
  15. Networking & Business Development Support:
  16. Attend relevant networking events and conferences to build relationships within the IP industry. Support business development efforts by promoting the firm’s services through engagement and outreach.

Qualifications:
  • Education:
  • Degree in Engineering, Science, or a related technical field, with good academic performance from reputable universities.
  • Experience:
  • Up to 3 years of experience in the Intellectual Property field, specifically in patent-related work. Experience in conducting basic patent searches, drafting, or filing patent applications is preferred.
  • Skills & Competencies:
    • Strong attention to detail and good organizational skills to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
    • Basic understanding of patent law and procedures, with a willingness to learn and develop expertise.
    • Good analytical skills to assist in patent searches and reporting.
    • Excellent communication skills in English, both written and verbal.
    • Ability to work under supervision and collaborate with senior team members.
    • Strong work ethic, with a proactive and eager approach to learning.

  • Familiarity with IP docketing systems or patent filing software.
  • At least 3 years experience in Patent field.
  • A positive attitude, with a willingness to develop in the IP field.
