[Business Today] Fireworks

When the clock ticks to 12 o’clock to welcome New Year, it is the most anticipated moment in everyone’s life or at least majority of us to watch, feel, hear and smell the sparkles of fireworks that beautify the sky in every part of the world. With that, I came across an article, the world’s best New Year’s Eve firework displays, and realized that concept and patterns of fireworks ignition varies across countries. As mentioned above, fireworks attract most of us, but I wonder if we have acknowledged the person who created them or at least if the efforts contributed by some of the individuals cross over our mind? Let me share a few inventions that “sparked” my attention with all of you.

a look into the patenting of fireworks

United States Patent No. US 8807037 B2, a patent that was granted on August 19, 2014 for Jake’s Fireworks Inc., teaches on reusable firework launchers for use with fireworks artillery shells. This invention was invented to improvise firework launchers so that properly placed artillery shells are launched with adequate lift charge and established effect charge.

The effect charge is referring to a bursting charge with a multiplicity of pearl charges, which after ignition, result in formation of colored streams or stars. The firework launchers overcome setback of conventional launchers not only on ensuring safety of launcher users and audiences, but on the structural integrity of the launcher itself, even in the event of an improper, inverted placement and ignition of an artillery shell. The said launchers may be used a number of times with successive shells.

Transporting Them Safely

Shipping and selling fireworks is not an easy process. The fireworks have to be secured from being stolen, as well as from weather conditions such as rainstorms which may damages the fireworks. United States Patent No. US 9370263 B2, a patent that was granted on June 21, 2016 for Arbor Valley Holdings, LLC discloses on a cargo container and method for selling fireworks utilizing the cargo container. The cargo container includes an outer housing, shelving units, doors, electrical lights, exit lights and an entrance sign.

A portable container with above mentioned features is transported to a predetermined location or multiple locations having fireworks stored in it. A buyer is allowed to enter the interior of the cargo container using one of the three consumer entrances, from which the buyer allowed to walk along first end of the outer housing to the second end of the outer housing of the container to view fireworks. Thereafter, the consumer negotiates a sales price and buys at least one selected fireworks within interior region of the container or outside the cargo container.

Lighting Them UP

In general, fireworks are lit with a lighter, matches or a punk. Sometime, these conventional methods may lead to unwanted circumstances i.e. burn the user and/or may accidentally ignite other fireworks. Billy R Dean came up with a solution to overcome the aforementioned setbacks by inventing an electrically operable fireworks igniter that is published as United States Patent No. US 9435618 B2, a patent that was granted on September 6, 2016.

United States Patent No. US 9435618 B2

The electrically operable firework igniter comprises a housing, first and second electrodes. The housing performs a function to receive a firework fuse. Meanwhile, the first and second electrodes coupled to source of *an electric charge. Once the firework fuse contacts the first and second electrodes, an electric charge is transferred to the firework fuse causing an ignition.

One’s Livelihood

Fireworks may not be an essential part of our lives, but it is noticeable that for some individuals, fireworks are part of their lives. In fact there are hundreds more or maybe thousands more inventions in the market. As demand for fireworks is never-ending, since they are commonly used for celebrations, opening and closing ceremonies of big events and so on, I trust improvements on fireworks are needed and worth to be considered. Remember, the best way to predict the future is to invent it – Alan Kay.
